We’re excited to welcome local historian Mark Miller to share his recent book, Encounters in Yellowstone: The Nez Perce Summer of 1877. Mark will be reading from the book, along with recounting his hunt for these stories from 150 years ago, and his process for braiding them together into a coherent narrative. His presentation will be followed by discussion and book signing.
More about Encounters in Yellowstone:
Encounters in Yellowstone: The Nez Perce Summer of 1877, tells the true stories of ordinary people who were caught up in the dramatic events of the summer of 1877 in Yellowstone Park. The Indians flight for freedom is a touchstone of the history of the American West, so most people know about their 1,200-mile running battle with the army that ended just forty miles from the Canadian border and freedom. However, few know the stories of the confrontations between the Nez Perce and park tourists. Encounters in Yellowstone tells about those thrilling adventures: Emma Cowan’s watching Indians shoot her husband in the head and then taking her captive; Andrew Weikert’s blazing gun battles when he tries to rescue friends missing after an Indian attack; George Cowan’s six-mile crawl to get help after he was shot three times and left for dead. The book tells these and other true stories with all the detail and drama of fiction.
More about Mark Miller
M. Mark Miller is a fifth generation Montanan who grew up on a cattle ranch in southwest Montana, about ninety miles from Yellowstone Park. His interest in early park travel began when he was a little boy listening to his grandmother’s tales of cooking bread in hot springs and throwing red flannel underwear into geysers to tint the next eruption pink.
He worked for Montana newspapers while in college at the University of Montana. After graduating, he was a reporter and editor for newspapers in Utah and Kentucky. He earned a doctorate and became a journalism professor at the Universities of Wisconsin and Tennessee.
Miller returned home to Montana in 2003. He has been researching Yellowstone Park history since then and has a collection of more than three-hundred first-person accounts of early travel to Yellowstone Park. Encounters in Yellowstone is his fifth book on early travel to Yellowstone Park. The others include the anthologies: Adventures in Yellowstone: Early Travelers Tell the Tales, The Stories of Yellowstone: Adventure Tales from the World’s First National Park, and Sidesaddles and Geysers: Women’s Stories from Old Yellowstone. In addition, he has published Macon’s Perfect Shot, a middle-grade novel about a fourteen-year-old boy’s adventures in Yellowstone Park in 1871.
Miller’s articles on Yellowstone Park and Montana history have appeared in Montana Quarterly, Big Sky Journal, and Gallatin History Quarterly (formerly Pioneer Museum Quarterly). He also lectures on park history to various civic groups.
He lives in Bozeman where he has been a volunteer at the Gallatin History Museum since 2004.
